A Bergenfield man set his garage on fire today while trying to deep fry a turkey for his family’s Easter dinner.
The owner of the home on River Edge Road was taken to the Englewood hospital with burns on his face. The burns were “not too serious,” said Bergenfield Fire Chief Robert Byrnes, who did not know the victim’s name.
He was cooking the turkey in the garage and the oil caught fire and a propane tank exploded, said Byrnes.
The fire gutted the one-car garage attached to a Cape Cod-style home. Firefighters quickly put out the fire and the home was not damaged.
The man’s daughter, who would identify herself only as Jeanne, said she didn’t know how the fire got out of control.
“There was an explosion after it went up in flames,” she said. She said she expected her father to return home for dinner, but they would not be having turkey.
