Hollywood, FL - 12/10/09
December 10, 2009 - On 12/10/09 at 04:15 hrs Police Officer J. Duran of the Hollywood Police Department was patrolling the Lakes of Emerald Hills when he smelled an odor of burning material in the 3100 Blk of N. 39th St. Officer Duran looked around the area but with a thick fog covering most of Broward County that night he realized to locate the source of the burning smell he would have to go house to house.
Officer Duran was out on foot when he discovered the source of the smell. He saw smoke pushing from the garage of 3141 N 39th st. Officer Duran notified Police dispatch to have Hollywood Fire Rescue respond along with additional Officers from the Hollywood Police Department. Officer Duran then alerted the sole occupant of the home by pounding on the door and windows.
Officer Duran escorted the home owner away from the home that was filling with smoke from the fire in the garage.
First arriving Hollywood Fire units made and aggressive interior search and attack. The fire was located in the south west corner of the garage and quickly put out.
The fire was discovered to be the result of a malfunctioning sprinkler pump the garage that caught fire and extended to items close by.
It was discovered while talking to the home owner that he was having issues with his smoke detectors and at the time of the fire they were not working. The home owner credited Police Officer Duran with saving his life.
Without Officer Duran locating the fire in its early stage and the malfunctioning smoke detectors the home owner may have never know his house was on fire till it was to late.
