1. Train Derailments

Flagler County, Florida

May 10, 2009 - Officials with the Flagler County Sheriff's Office that one railroad employee was hurt when a train heading from Jacksonville to Miami derailed near Palm Coast about 6:45 p.m. Saturday. Authorities at the scene said 37 cars and two locomotives on the Florida East Coast Railroad train jumped the tracks, including some rail cars that contained hydrochloric acid, a hazardous substance. Hazardous materials teams from the St. Johns County Fire-Rescue were called to the scene to try and prevent the leak and spread of the substance. On Sunday, a Jacksonville haz-mat team was sent to assist.

Emergency responders did not need to evacuate any homes as the area in which the train derailed is mostly industrial. Both engines of the train and 37 cars -- including automobiles, corn syrup tanks and boxcars -- left the tracks. The derailment also sparked a small brush fire, but authorities said teams from the Palm Coast Fire Department and the Flagler County Fire Rescue had it under control. Investigators had determined the cause from a faulty welded rail.
