11-20-10 Wallington, NJ

November 20, 2010 - On Saturday, November 20, 2010 just before 0400 hrs, a Newark man who was later charged for being under the influence of alcohol drove his car into the Passaic River near the intersections of Main Avenue and Midland Avenue. Wallington Police Officer's rescue the driver using a flotation device and pulling him up a very steep incline.

The driver was unsure if there were any other passengers inside his car. That prompted the need for dive teams from Wallington, Garfield, Passaic and Oradell Fire Departments to search the submerged vehicle and check for possible victims. The Bergen County Police WSAR Team was also on the scene in the event of a fifth boat was needed.

After several dives it was deemed that there were no other victims. The vehicle was winched out of the river just after 0700 hrs by Lavelle Equipment Repair and Towing and all units returned to quarters. The victim was taken to a local hospital and charged with DUI.
