1. Women In The Fire Service

Reena Mishory - River Edge, NJ Fire Department

In September of 2002 I moved to River Edge. I had a tough two years trying to fit in. By freshmen year I felt a little bit more comfortable living here but was still missing something. On October 12, 2005 I decided to join the fire department. There were a few other females on the department which helped a bit. The hardest part was listening to other people laugh when I told them I was a firefighter. Since I’m a 5’2 female many people didn’t believe that I could actually pull my weight as a firefighter.

Now its 2009, I’m still on the department, I’m a probationary firefighter and I couldn’t be happier with being on the department. I’ve already completed fire school were I was the smallest and the only girl in my class. I’m not trying to prove myself as a female; I’m trying to prove myself as a firefighter!
